Does Intel Core i3-8300 (or i3-8100) support "VMX Unrestricted Guest"?

Hello,

Because I got burned when I tried to install VMWorkstation-Pro 14 on my perfectly good 2009 vintage Intel Core i7 system I need to know for sure whether the new basic system I'm thinking of putting together will support "VMX Unrestricted Guest" and whatever else v14 requires.  I've been looking at the Intel Core i3-8300 generation 8 CPU that was launched in Q2'18 with the thought of installing it on a compatible Asus motherboard (PRIME H370M-PLUS).  From the generalization I see on the vmware website regarding system requirements for v14 it appears that it should work, but when I look at the i3-8300 (or i3-8100) specifications on the Intel site I see no mention of anything I would recognize as relating to something called "VMX Unrestricted Guest".  A lot of this type of thing is heavily couched in buzzwords as far as I'm concerned so it may actually address this issue.  The Intel CPU specifications do mention something they call "Intel Trusted Execution Technology", which these CPUs don't support, but that may mean something entirely different.  What terms might chip makers actually use to mean the same thing as "VMX Unrestricted Guest"?

If anyone knows for sure that v14 works with either the i3-8300 or i3-8100 or has any other comments I'd appreciate that information.

Thanks,

Ray

After a power outage on my Imac I receive this message when trying to open Windows 8 in Fusion.  I attached my problem report with the details. I have researched the knowledge base but I don't find anything specific for this issue.   I appreciate any support you can provide.  Thank you!  Michael

As in who created it from vRealize Automation? if so that's easy as vRA tags all machines with the account used to provision the machines, Also has an audit log with vRA too of date and time and who it was. attached images for an example.

ISCSI on ESXI

Hello All,

We have a requirment to connect ISCSI storage to few ESXi servers; the storage should be shared across all the ESXi servers. SO my query is which of the below is the best practice to create ISCSI targets

1) Create single ISCSI target and add all the ESXi hosts under this.

2) Create different ISCSI targets for each ESXi hosts.

An early response is much appreciated.

Thanks

Aj

Interesting. I am currently restoring my failed Mojave Beta 1 virtual machine from a backup. Before I first deleted it, a couple of days ago, I tried to have it update to Beta 2, but it said I had the latest version. I'll try that again, but I fail to see how it will be able to update itself when the Finder isn't working.

There is no way to identify from the Intel ARK site whether the VMX Unrestricted Guest feature is available. Trusted Execution Technology (TXT) is different from VMX Unrestricted Guest.

VMX Unrestricted Guest requires Extended Page Table (EPT). But presence of EPT for Nehalem and older CPUs does not mean they have EPT. VMX Unrestricted Guest has been available starting with Westmere CPU (2010) and newer. There are a few exceptions with Pentium N and Atom CPUs launched after 2010 that does not have EPT.

I don't see a lot of vmware.log files with i3 CPUs here in this community forum. I have seen vmware.log with Sandy Bridge i3 mobile CPU and it has the VMX Unrestricted Guest feature.

vmx| I125: hostCPUID codename: Sandy Bridge

vmx| I125: hostCPUID name: Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-2350M CPU @ 2.30GHz

vmx| I125: Common: MSR      0x485 =         0x100401e5

vmx| I125:   IA-32e mode guest                        {0,1}

vmx| I125:   Unrestricted guest                       {0,1}

MSR 0x485 bit 5 value of 1 indicates VMX Unrestricted Guest is available. In this case hexadecimal e5 = binary 1110-0101.

I have seen vmware.log with Pentium G4560 (Kaby Lake) and it has it, too.

https://ark.intel.com/compare/126688,129942

Going by the i3 Sandy Bridge mobile and the Kaby Lake Pentium, it is very likely that i3-8100 or i3-8300 CPUs has the VMX Unrestricted Guest feature.

However, there is also a small risk that if VMware Workstation 14.x does not recognise the Family/Model/Stepping of a relatively new CPU, advanced virtualisation features such as virtualised performance counters will not work. This happened with 12.5.x with Kaby Lake CPUs. But if you don't need virtualised performance counters enabled in your VM, it should be fine to go with the i3-8300 launched Q2 2018. The symptom that the Family/Model/Stepping is not recognised would be it shows codename as Pentium in the vmware.log.

vmx| I125: hostCPUID codename: Pentium Core -- Unknown codename

vmx| I125: guest vs. host CPUID guest codename: Pentium Core -- Unknown codename

live migration of virtual machines from vcenter 5.1 to standalone ESXi 6.7

I am trying to do a live migration of Virtual machines running on vSphere cluster 5.1U1 to standalone ESXi 6.7. I tried using vmware converter however stuck with SSL error

SSL exception: error:140000DB:SSL routines:SSL routines:short read

Has anyone experienced this situation and would please suggest an alternate way to bypass this error.

Cheers

As I know, connecting an iscsi LUN to multiple targets and then presenting them to several ESXi hosts cause problems. Because each host connect using own target to storage LUN and it conflicts with the IO request.

Based on my experiences a single target is better because all ESXi hosts are active and only one target manage IO requests.

If your storage device support multipath input-output (MPIO), you can achieve greater throughput by using multiple targets.

Pay attention you must present all target to all server. (each server must access to all target)

Thanks for your response Finikiez. IN this case I had to go through these patches as the latest one would not install straightaway.

1) ESXi550-201501001.zip
2) ESXi550-201505002.zip
3) update-from-esxi5.5-5.5_update03.zip

4) ESXi550-201512001.zip
5) ESXi550-201601001.zip
6) ESXi550-201602001.zip
7) ESXi550-201608001.zip
8) ESXi550-201609001.zip

So, it doesn't appears that these updates are cumulative.

Hi, I've the same problem on VMware 14.1.2 build-8497320 on Windows 10 1803 64bit

Every few seconds/minutes the mouse looses focus and I need to click inside the VM to regain it.

Mousedrivers:

- VMware pointing device

- VMware USB pointing device (2x)

Only problem in devicemanager on my machine is on driver (don't know if it might be related?):

- Microsoft Virtual Studion Location Simulator Sensor

Error: This device doesn't work correctly because Windows can't load required devicedrivers. (Code 31)

Any suggestions to solve this are greatly appreciated.

Migrate High Sierra VM to new Mojave VM?

Is there a way, on a new Mojave VM, to migrate everything contained on a High Sierra VM? I suspect the High Sierra "Virtual Disk-cl1.vmdk" has all the necessary stuff, but how do I access that virtual disk from the Mojave Migration Assistant?

Can you please list the known 3rd party software that causes this issue, so we can all check if we have it, and disable it during VMWare use?

Certificates are self-signed generated during wizard.

Time is in Sync between Appliance and IAAS host.

Agent is installed on IAAS Host

DNS records are in place.

Database config in place.

IAAS host pre-requisites were fixed during installation wizard and host was rebooted, then pre-requisites validated successfully in wizard.

What else I missed which causing this error.

Just clone the vm and upgrade it to Mojave.

ESXi 6.7 and Fusion 10.1.X both support booting APFS so you are OK.

Re: Can't create a vm with VC:HostFolder.createVM_Task()

Hi Paul,

Excerpt from Folder documentation at https://code.vmware.com/apis/358/vsphere#/doc/vim.Folder.html#createVm

This operation only works if the folder's childType includes VirtualMachine

Also, here is the documentation for the childType property that shows how to check if you can create a vm inside a given folder:

Specifies the object types a folder may contain. When you create a folder, it inherits its childType from the parent folder in which it is created. childType is an array of strings. Each array entry identifies a set of object types - Folder and one or more managed object types. The following list shows childType values for the different folders:

  • { "vim.Folder", "vim.Datacenter" } - Identifies the root folder and its descendant folders. Data center folders can contain child data center folders and Datacenter managed objects. Datacenter objects contain virtual machine, compute resource, network entity, and datastore folders.
  • { "vim.Folder", "vim.Virtualmachine", "vim.VirtualApp" } - Identifies a virtual machine folder. A virtual machine folder may contain child virtual machine folders. It also can contain VirtualMachine managed objects, templates, and VirtualApp managed objects.
  • { "vim.Folder", "vim.ComputeResource" } - Identifies a compute resource folder, which contains child compute resource folders and ComputeResource hierarchies.
  • { "vim.Folder", "vim.Network" } - Identifies a network entity folder. Network entity folders on a vCenter Server can contain Network, DistributedVirtualSwitch, and DistributedVirtualPortgroup managed objects. Network entity folders on an ESXi host can contain only Network objects.
  • { "vim.Folder", "vim.Datastore" } - Identifies a datastore folder. Datastore folders can contain child datastore folders and Datastore managed objects.

Creare VM su Mirroring o in RAID5 (in ESXi)?

$

Thanks.. so based on your suggestion i will create 2 iscsi targets and add all the ESXi hosts under these two targets for multipathing

Re: ISCSI on ESXI

Yes, I suggest you read this fantastic document about multipathing in ESXi.

But I made mistake and you might be understood wrong. MPIO you can use multiple NIC or HBA to connect to single target which provides you better performance and reliability and load balancing. The previous post was corrected.

I am sorry for the mistake.
